A chronic disease of the lungs. Its
symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and
wheezing. These symptoms can be caused by allergens or non-allergic
substances (eg. air temperature, respiratory infections, cigarette
smoke, etc.) The goals of
good asthma care are to be free of asthma symptoms, go to school
everyday, participate in all sports and activities, be able to sleep
through the night, avoid unplanned doctor's office visits, avoid
emergency room visits or stays in the hospital, and see that parents do
not miss work because of their child's asthma.
